2026 MYA Scottish District Wooden Hull IOM Championship at Greenock Model Yacht and Power Boat Club

Greenock MY&PBC hosted the 2026 MYA Scottish District Wooden Hull IOM Championship on 2nd May 2026 at Murdieston Dam. The event drew 15 skippers from 7 different clubs from across Scotland and Northern Ireland, from Buchanness to North Down in Ireland. There were 11 different designs on show including 2 new designs including Ian Dundas with his Nexus and Ian Davidson with his IDIOM.
Despite the distinct lack of wind and cloudy conditions before the scheduled start time the wind gods played ball with the forecasted south-west wind of 4 knots gusting to 9 knots for the rest of the day. RO Gordon Allison set a windward-leeward course with a port rounding at the windward mark to a spreader and then an inward-outward gate following the downwind leg with two long beats and a start/finish line.
The morning session proved to be tricky with sometimes subtle and sometimes quite large wind shifts resulting in 6 different skippers taking 1st places and large scores for all. Steve Taylor 43 with his Corbie 1 proving to be the most consistent. He was closely followed by Ian Dundas 38, Brian Summers 07 and John Owens 33.
The Greenock Club special lunch of pie, beans, mash and gravy was served by volunteers Margaret, Scott and the well-known model yachting veteran and MYA Vice President, Hughie Shields.
The afternoon session began with the sun trying to burn off the cloud, the wind remained stable from the south west and the Race Officer deciding to move the weather marks to lengthen the windward leg. During the afternoon session Richard Rowan 86 began to find form after a slow start as he put together a series of scores, which rapidly started to close the gap amongst the leading skippers. Steve Taylor 43 and Ian Dundas 38 maintained their consistency throughout the afternoon session. To close out the day Malcolm Worsley 13, won the last race to become the 7th skipper to claim a first place.
After 16 races and with the sun out, the RO was happy to end the successful event at 16.30. With 3 discards the overall results were calculated and in 3rd place was Richard Rowan with his Alternative. In 2nd place was Ian Dundas who performed well with his brand-new Nexus design. Winning by a margin of 8 points, as well as retaining and winning the 2026 MYA Scottish District Wooden Hull IOM Championship Trophy for the tenth time, was Steve Taylor proving consistency is key.
Steve thanked the RO Gordon Alison, the Race Team and Greenock MY&PBC for a wonderful day of competitive racing in challenging conditions with these beautifully built and fast boats.
