The Chase Sailing Club hosted the D-Zero Open meeting over the weekend of the 14th and 15th of September 2024, drawing seven entries for a highly competitive six-race series. With sailors facing varied conditions over the weekend, the event showcased some tight racing, with only 4 points separating the top three competitors.

The schedule for Saturday was ambitious, with four races planned, two back-to-back in the morning, followed by a break for lunch, and then another two races back-to-back in the afternoon. Despite the high intensity, the sailors were treated to stellar hospitality from the Chase SC galley staff, who laid on an exceptional lunch for the fleet. After refuelling, competitors headed back out for the afternoon's races.

Alex Berry of The Chase Sailing Club dominated the day, putting in a stunning performance that set him up for overall victory. His ability to read the shifting winds on the lake and maintain top speeds through the gusts made him a standout sailor.

Close behind was Thomas Southwell from Lee-on-Solent Sailing Club, whose consistency and strategic decision-making saw him take 2nd place overall. Graham Flynn, another Chase SC sailor, rounded out the podium in 3rd, pushing hard in every race to stay in contention.

As the sun set, the sailors and support crew gathered for a fantastic evening of food, music, and camaraderie. A delicious fish and chip supper was prepared by Trish Blackham and her team, earning rave reviews from all in attendance. With DJ Steve T on the decks, the atmosphere quickly became lively, with the beer, red wine and Sambuca flowing freely. While the night was full of laughs and entertainment, some of the fleet woke up on Sunday with sore heads.

Despite any lingering effects from Saturday night's festivities, the sailors were back on the water for a 10:30 start on Sunday morning. The Race Officer delivered another two back-to-back races, with the fleet battling hard to secure their final positions.

Alex Berry maintained his lead to finish in 1st place overall, with Thomas Southwell securing 2nd and Graham Flynn holding onto 3rd place. The close points spread at the top was a testament to the high level of competition across the fleet.

The weekend was a great success, with excellent racing, superb hospitality, and a fantastic social atmosphere. Special thanks to the galley staff, Trish Blackham and her team, DJ Steve T, and the Race Officer for their efforts in making the event run smoothly. All participants left looking forward to the next D-Zero Open!
