Hansa Class UK Traveller Trophy Series Round 4 at Rutland Sailing Club

On Wednesday 19th June 2024 Rutland Sailability hosted round 4 of the Hansa UK Traveller Trophy. 15 visiting boats travelled from as far north as Glasgow and as far south as Weymouth, some staying one or two nights.

22 boats assembled for a day of four races. The conditions were good, dry, sunny, with a light to moderate NE wind.

Nick Bett and Val Milward were Race Officers for the day and laid a triangular course with two starts, the first for the Liberty and 1 person 303, the second for the 2 person 303 and the 2.3.

The morning races got away cleanly with the fleets splitting left and right to the windward mark. Suitably refreshed the fleets returned for races 3 and 4 after lunch. The wind had dropped and was flicking further north, the course was altered accordingly.

In the Liberty fleet Paul Phillips took 3 firsts to win 1st prize. 2nd and 3rd places were a hard fought between the two local helms Chris Emmet and Paul Pearson. They tied on points and Chris took the 2nd on discards.

The 1-person 303s enjoyed some close contact interaction with the Liberty's, challenging for the front positions within the racing fleet. The start of Race 1 saw Jazz Turner in 3278 and Rory McKinna in 2284 tack onto port at the pin end of the line ahead of the fleet. Their dominance continued for all four races. Tied on points Jazz took first prize with a win in the last race. Rory was second and Mike Everitt took third.

Lynne and Stuart Swan in 3221 gave us a masterclass in racing in the 2 person 303. They too took a pin end start in the first race and continued to take a commanding lead in all four races taking a well-deserved first prize. For the rest of the fleet there was still all to play after lunch, however during the afternoon the experience of Rick and Sue Jilling 3223 and Paula Roddy and Paul Simmons 3220 showed to gain 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the 2.3 class Lindsay Burns 2111 continued her winning streak with Lara Sturgis 2536 2nd.

Tea, cake and the Prize giving rounded off a successful day.

Thank you to all the volunteers who ensured the smooth running of the event.

Someone looking around seeing so many people enjoying a 'catch up' with friends old and new remarked, "Sailing keeps people together!".
