The 170th NYYC Annual Regatta took place over the June 14th to 16th weekend on the waters of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. Hundreds of sailors were thrilled beyond belief at the awesome weather served up by the weather Gods for this year's event.

The regatta format features the incredibly popular Round Island Race on Friday (a 21.0nm circumnavigation of Conanicut Island) and then two days of either round-the-buoys racing or PHRF navigational racing. It may have been one of the best Round Island Races ever, with southwest winds of 10-20 kts, sunny, mid-70s temps, and a super-fast race for most boats. Here is how the weekend regatta broke down.

ORC C Division

Winning this 14-boat fleet was Bob Manchester's J/133 VAMOOSE from Barrington YC with an enviable record of 1-3-1 for 5 pts total.

ORC D Division

This 15-boat fleet featured twin J/112Es and a trio of J/122s. In the end, the top J/team was Al Minella's J/112E THE ROCC, taking fourth place behind a trio of Cape 31s. Sixth place went to Robin Team's J/122 TEAMWORK. Then, rounding out the top ten was Jack Gregg's J/122 TARAHUMARA in 9th and Tom Sutton's J/122 LEADING EDGE in 10th place.

PHRF 2 Division

The fourteen-boat fleet saw a few top J/teams bearly sweep the podium. Winning was Brian Hiller's J/125 CROSSFIRE with a 1-1-1-5 tally for 8 pts. The silver medal went to Erik Asgeirsson's J/45 ACADIA with a 3-2-8-1 record for 14 pts. Then, Chris & Joe Brito's J/121 INCOGNITO lost a tie-breaker on countback to take 4th place with a 5-3-5-2 scoreline for 15 pts.

Commenting on their weekend of racing in this division was skipper of the J/45 ACADA- Erik Asgeirsson; "We had an incredibly close, touch regatta yesterday. The first race was very tough with wind speeds below six knots. The final race in winds of 10-15 knots was very special. We were on the starting line with Incognito and other boats. We had great crew work and boat speed & tactics, and we just pulled away on the first leg, rounding in second. We then passed the Corby 41 on the downwind leg with some great gybes and boat speed. We held our lead on the reach. And then, we increased the lead some on the final upwind leg to win the final race! That was an impressive outcome with a strong class. Great regatta from the Around the Island to weekend racing."

PHRF 3 Division

The eleven-boat fleet saw twin J/111s sailed quite well. Winning was Abhijeet Lele's VARUNA with a 2-5-1-3 record for 11 pts. Taking fifth place was Doug Curtiss's WICKED 2.0 with a 5-3-4-6 tally for 18 pts. This was a very tightly packed top five in this division!
