Russia leads Cascais Dragon Gold Cup

by Event media on 2 Sep 2008
CASCAIS DRAGON GOLD CUP 2008 Nico Martinez http://www.nicomartinez.com

Russia's Artiom Kuznetsov with Vladimir Silkin and Georgy Shaiduko are Cascais Dragon Gold Cup leaders after race 1. In an eight knot west breeze, the Russians were stronger than Denmark's Jorgen Schonerr, Jan Eli Gravard and Christian Videbaek and Edward Sawyer, Martin Payne and William Willet, from the USA.

Monday the 74 boat Dragon fleet started a tough battle for the Gold Cup title. After a general recall, the fleet started a very tactical 12 mile windward-leeward race. Germany's Thomas Muller lead the fleet until the end, but was disqualified (BFD).

Artiom Kuznetsov, one of the 17 Russian crews present at Cascais, crossed the line second to be crowned winners, showing the Dragon Russian power. Denmark's Jorgen Schonerr was second and he's a real candidate to the title, after being also second at the Chrysler Challenger 2008, the Pre-Event test.

Third place went to Edward Sawyer, Martin Payne and William Willet of the USA with Markus Wieser, Thomas Auracher and Sergei Pugatchev of the Ukraine were fourth and Poul Richard Hoj Jensen with Theis Palm and Andrew Mordem finished fifth.

Three Portuguese crews close the 'top 10'; José Matoso/Charles Nankin/Afonso Marques are 8th, Mário Quina/ Fernando Passeiro/Eric Van Dame (9th) and Manuel Champalimaud/Mark Hart/Ed Streeter (10th).

Cascais Dragon Gold Cup is part of Cascais Vela 2008 project and with the participation of 74 boats, representing 16 countries, is considered as the most important and prestigious regatta of the International Dragon Class, which returns to Cascais 10 years after it was held here in 1998.

Tomorrow the fleet will have two races, starting at 12:00h.
