Laser Radial Womens Worlds 2009- Karatsu, Japan- 30 countries

by Sail-World.com on 26 Jul 2009
Canada’s Lisa Ross SW
The entry list for the Laser Radial Womens Worlds 2009 in Karatsu, Japan, which runs from July 25 to August 2 shows that it will be a tough regatta. .

As expected the Japanese contingent is the largest with sixteen sailors out of the overall 80 entries from 30 countries, but perhaps the surprise of these worlds, Canada has the next largest group of sailors - with 11 sailors, ahead of the USA with 8 and Great Britain 7.

Canada is especially proud of the Laser dinghy, of which some 196,000 have been built. It was designed by Canadian Bruce Kirby in 1969 in cooperation with fellow Canadian Ian Bruce, the boat builder, who only recently received the Order of Canada for his contribution to the sport of sailing.

This simple, low-cost but high-performance dinghy was born. The Laser is now sailed by thousands of sailors in well over 100 countries worldwide. It offers a physical and tactical challenge, is quick to rig and easy to transport, which combined with the class’s strict one-design rules, have made it popular with sailors at all levels.

The boat has featured as Olympic equipment since 1996 Atlanta Games and at Beijing 2008 and now London 2012 will be used in both Men’s and Women’s One Person Dinghy events.

Leading the large Canadian squad will be Lisa Ross from Halifax, Nova Scotia and Jennifer Spalding from Vancouver B.C. and they are the top ranked Candian Womens Laser Radial Sailors, with Ross looking for the form which had her ranked as high as fourth in the world in this class.
