Sail to save the sea this summer solstice

by Nancy Knudsen on 28 May 2014
Summer Sailstice and Sailors for the Sea join money-raising forces for notional circumnavigation SW
This year, Sailors for the Sea and Summer Sailstice have teamed up to create a unique fundraiser on June 21. Together, they are mobilizing sailors to join a collective circumnavigation and raise funds for ocean health.

How does it work?
Sail 10 miles + Donate $1 or more per mile x 2,600 sailors across the globe = a great day on the water for all and $26,000 raised towards restoring ocean heath

Why does the ocean need our help?

? The Earth's waters are under increasing pressure from human use; marine life, coastal environments and even the deepest areas of the ocean are all impacted by pollution.
? In all five oceans, the Great Lakes and many rivers, plastic debris can be found, sometimes in the shape of a bottle or so small you need a microscope!
? 90% of the big fish in the ocean are gone - making the issue of overfishing and mismanagement of fisheries an important matter for our global food resources.
? Every year 400 dead zones appear in oceans and large lakes around the world created by runoff from sewage, urban land use and fertilizers.

While these problems can seem insurmountable, hope exists to save the oceans.

Sailors for the Sea is a leading environmental organization that engages, educates, inspires and activates the sailing and boating community toward healing the ocean and protecting the waters they love!
