Greek defenders consistently lead at Tornado World Championship

by Icarus Sailing Media on 16 Jun 2016
Fleet in action on day four - 2016 Tornado World Championship Martina Barnetova
The World Championships of the Tornado class in Lindau (Lake Constance) were continued on Wednesday with fifth race. Greek defenders Iordanis Paschalidis and Konstantinos Trigonis got one more bullet for their fourth win of a race. So they forced their lead by only four points. The fifth race allows now one discard and so some crews changed positions.

Second overall at present is also a team from Greece: Nikolaos Mavros and Alexandros Tagarapoulos with eleven points, followed by the Australian team Gavin Colby and Billy Leonard in third position with also 11 points, just three points ahead of Australians Brett Burvill with the young girl from southern Bavaria, Estela Jentsch. This team today finished second. She has a lot more confidence now and did a great job with big smiles at the end of the day“, the helmsman said. Burvill/Jentsch are ranked as the best mixed team after five races.

Fifth overall are the Kiwis Bill Caunce and Aaron Duncan, followed by the best German team, Bob and Marc Baier from lake Forggensee. The race on Wednesday was started without delay at 1pm with northwesterly winds (two bfts) caressing the lakes surface and the sun was smiling between grey clouds for a change today. As expected the championship defenders didn’t miss to win one more race, followed by Burvill/Jentsch and the Aussies Gavin Colby and Billy Leonard. The first boats crossed the line after one hour, 16 minutes later all 28 boats had finished.

Immediately the next race was started. But the wind decreased again and only a few minutes later the race was abandoned. Over a period of two hours the race committee had all teams in a stand by modus waiting for good winds – but despite the effort it was not possible to start again. So the fleet was sent back to Lindauer Segler-Club harbour.

Ten races are scheduled – and two more days to sail the missing five races. However regardless of the number of races still to come the championship with more than four concluded races will be valid.

Results after five of 10 races (30 crews from 11 nations, one discard)
1. Iordanis Paschalidis/Konstantinos Trigonis, GRE, 4 points
2. Nikolaos Mavros/Alexandros Tagarapoulos, GRE, 11 points
3. Gavin Colby/Billy Leonard, AUS, 11 points
4. Brett Burvill/Estela Jentsch, AUS/GER, 14 points
5. Bill Caunce/Aaron Duncan, NZL, 24 points
6. Bob und Marc Baier, GER, 33 points
