New Olympic sailing discipline born for mixed sailing

by Roland Gaebler on 15 May 2011

Mixed Multihull Sailing World- and European Championship.

It´s now time to get the races and championships ready for the new Olympic sailing discipline. The Tornado Class has a rich history with great mixed sailing that spans 40 years. There are also other classes such as Hobie 16, Dart 18, the F18 and youth classes between 16 and 10 Foot with their mixed teams in the rankings.

Our biggest heroes ever in Mixed Sailing is Poul and Trine Elvström (DEN), who won many Championships in the Tornado against the best male teams. They finished fourth at Olympic Games 1984.

The world championship of Team Gaebler showed the power of mixed sailing at the top against the best Olympic Sailors.

From now on Mixed Sailing on Multihulls is more in the focus of the spectators, media and sponsors. Mixed Team Sailing with Tornados can be the Formula 1 of Olympic Summer Games and will become one of the most emotional sports in the Olympic Program. The ISAF and IOC will profit from it. The spectators and media at the Olympic Arena will love it.

Now we officially announce the Mixed Sailing World Championship of the Tornado Class from 20th to 28th August 2011 in Biel/Suisse and the Mixed Sailing European Championship on Lake Como Italy from 8th to 11th September 2011. More information and NOR here.

These Mixed Sailing Championships are in conjunction with the Open Tornado Championship. We will have an extra Championship and ranking for Mixed Sailing. The venues are in the wonderful location of the Alp Region in Suisse and Italy. More information and entry details you find also here and here.

On top of this we invite mixed sailing teams and single sailors (Female + Male) to the 'Tornado Speed-sailing' in the 'Kiel Sailing Arena' - 18th to 26th June 2011. This event is in the center of Kiel and we expect 300,000+ spectators and a lot of media. Mixed Sailing on Tornado will be also the sporting highlight of the Kieler Woche 2011. We will bring high performance sailing and entertainment together in a way never seen before. One of the world’s best Rock bands will play aside our Sailing Arena.

The Tornado Class will supply boats for free to the Mixed Teams. More information is available via the Speed Sailing www.speedsailing.org!website. You do not necessarily need your own boat. Please send us your name and we will find a boat, crew and coach for you.

Mixed Sailing in a Tornado will get the highest media value for teams and event sponsors. This is the only way to finance the sailing for teams on a global tour. We will soon announce more details about our new Mixed Sailing Races and Championships.
