The 2010 Star World Championship, which will be held at the Yacht Club of Rio de Janeiro, starts Tuesday January 12 with the registration of the participants and measuring of the boats. This top sailing event features 11 world champions among the 81 entries from 20 countries. The opening ceremony takes place on Friday, on the same day as the training regatta. The first official race will start on Saturday, at 1 p.m.

The Star class is one of the most respected sailing categories for demanding great technical and tactical skill from its helmsmen and crew. Star world champions competing in this month's race include Brazilians Alan Adler (1989), Torben Grael (1990), Marcelo Ferreira (1990 and 1997), Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada (2007), as well as US sailors George Szabo and Rick Peters (2009), Canadian Ross MacDonald (1997), Frenchman Xavier Rohart (2003 and 2005), British sailor Iain Percy (2002) and Swedish sailor Fredrik Loof (2001 and 2004).

In addition to five world champions, Brazil will also be represented in the competition by 13 Olympic medalists: five-time medalist Torben Grael (three of those conquered together with Marcelo Ferreira), four-time winner Robert Scheidt (one with Bruno Prada), two-time medalist Lars Grael and Reinaldo Conrad, one of the most experienced sailors, a bronze medalist in 1968, in Mexico, and in 1976, in Canada.

The following countries will be represented in the tournament: Brazil (24), Italy (12), Argentina (8), Germany (6), USA (6), Portugal (3), Switzerland (3), England (3), Canada (2), Chile (2), Sweden (2), Croatia (2), Georgia (1), Spain (1), Serbia (1), France (1), Norway (1), Greece (1), Ireland (1) and Austria (1).

The Yacht Club of Rio de Janeiro (ICRJ) celebrates its 90th birthday in 2010 and will host the Star World Championship for the fourth time - also hosting the event in 1960, 1980 and 1996. Since September, it has been the host of Brazil’s major sailing events: the Match Race Brazil, the Clipper Regatta, the round world race, Santos-Rio, Rio Circuit, Royal Thames, South American Star Championship, Chocolates Nestlé Match Cup and now the Star World Championship.

The Star World Championship 2010 is sponsoring by Banco do Brasil, Transpetro, Governo Federal, Gol Linhas Aéreas, Santa Constanza, Wollner and Secretaria Estadual de Turismo, Esporte e Lazer do Rio de Janeiro. The event is organized by Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA), Confederação Brasileira de Vela e Motor (CBVM) and Federação de Vela do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FEVERJ).

Gloves off! (Or is that actually gloves on?)
Gloves off, bare-knuckle street fighter style, or tape the hands up and go the padded mitts Well now... Isn't that actually a really good point. Normally, you'd say it was gloves off, time to get physical in a bare-knuckle street fighter sense.
