This year the Subic Commodore's Cup will include four days of racing for Flying Fifteens, dinghies, Hobie 16s and windsurfers - that's while the Rolex China Sea Race fleet is en route Hong Kong-Philippines. And then the Big Boats take over for a further four days of racing in the sparkling environs of Subic Bay.

The deepwater bay that includes the gigantic ex-US military base, airport and dockyards (as well as the Subic Bay Yacht Club) is a truly first class spot for a regatta. Organisers hope that boats sailing in the Hong Kong to Subic Rolex China Sea Race will 'stay an extra day' and participate in the Commodore's Cup. Numbers of stay-overs have been down in recent years, but indications are that 2this year's event is attracting a very good entry list. It's a very good regatta - location, location, location - that just needs the numbers to lift it up to the top flight of the Asian regatta rankings. Race Management by 'Jerry and the Racemakers' Rollin, so you know it'll be good.

It's a walk-on-walk-off regatta, based at the Subic Bay Yacht Club. Sailing is typically conducted in 12-18 kts of breeze under blue skies in 28 degrees of delicious tropical warmth. The only thing cold around this regatta is the beer - the perfect antidote to Hong Kong in April. C'mon, you didn't really want to turn round at the end of the RCSR and go straight back to clammy humidity and fog in Hong Kong, did you?
