Asia Pacific Student Cup - Singapore on top after Day 1

by Christopher Lim on 21 Sep 2012
Match Racing in the Singapore City - Asia Pacific Student Cup 2012 Andrew Tam
The inaugural Asia Pacific Student Cup (APSC) 2012 kicked off yesterday with 11 teams representing tertiary institutions from countries including Singapore, Japan, Thailand, China and Australia vying for top honors in this match race event. Organized by the Singapore Management University (SMU), with support from the Singapore Sailing Federation as well as with sponsorship from Zhik, the APSC has become the largest match race event ever held in Singapore and opens the door for future international events to follow.

After the first day of racing, which saw winds in the Marina Bay ranging from four to 10 knots, Singaporean skipper Calvin Lim from the Singapore Management University tops the leaderboard with seven wins from eight races. Close behind with six wins from seven races is compatriot Russell Kan, also from Singapore.

Japan’s Kosaku Yoshida lies in third with five wins from six races. There was drama on the water and the umpires were kept busy throughout with the fast paced SB20 boats providing little room for error. Four spinnaker poles also were damaged in the course of the racing showing just how competitive these sailors all are.

Two more days of racing follow and although the leaderboard is starting to take shape, it is anyone’s guess to predict the outcome of the round robins.
